Readers respond to images, not just words. That’s why sensory details are the life blood of every sentence. That means nothing in your story should be included as mere ornamentation or because it was or could’ve been in the room. Every detail should be in service to your story.
In Pillar 2, we’ll explore:
- Why details matter
- Your reader’s brain on sensory images
- How to select the right details
- What you already know about selecting essential details
- How to slant your details to convey emotion
- How to juxtapose details to keep readers in suspense
Words
We’ll trim the fat, strike repetitive thoughts or phrases and eliminate unnecessary clutter. We’ll chisel your sentences until they’re laser sharp. You’ll create images, and most important, move your reader.
In Week 3, we’ll explore
- How to trim the excess with examples
- How to make sentences muscular and vivid
- How to replace weak to-be verbs with active, precise, descriptive verbs
- The simple technique to creating conflict and drama right on the sentence level
- How to use the vowel scale for emotional impact

How much time will it take to go through the course?
Each of the 3 weeks has approximately 1 hour of content. Each pillar is split up into 5 – 6 lessons which are between 10 and 15 minutes long.
How much time will it take me to move through the course?
That’s up to you. The lessons take about an hour each week, and the accompanying exercises can take anywhere from an hour to more, depending on how much work you want to put it in. There’s no way to fall behind in this course, though. You can take the lessons at your own pace. And you have lifetime access. You’ll want to keep coming back to the lessons for each story. These are timeless principles and they’ll keep you in good stead as you continue to create new stories.
